Character: Marta Lualdi
Series/Fandom: Tales of Symphonia 2
Deviance: d2 - Emil is really an amnesiac, meaning he really is Aster (who supposedly died at the hands of Lord Ratatosk) and will slowly regain his memories over time. It'll also eventually default to the perfect ending of the game.
Age: 16
Gender: Female
Species: Human
Canon Used: Mainly the games: Tales of Symphonia 1 and 2. If I come across any supplemental things, like manga scans or the like, I'll do my best to tie them in, too. But as of right now, I have no access to those.
Appearance: Here, aaaaand... another shot: Here
Psychology: Marta, on the surface, is loud, opinionated, strong-willed... but happy. She always has good intentions, and stays true to her loving and trusting nature. She's a little bit of a tomboy, and she's quite passionate about getting her way: she knows what it is that she wants, and while she doesn't always know how to get it, she'll try whatever it takes. Sometimes, she's even accused of being... "too much". ?
On a deeper level, she has her serious moments, usually involving her struggle to completely sort out what she believes to be right without a shadow of a doubt. She has a habit of viewing the world in very black-and-white terms, and an even worse habit of projecting her personal dream of how things should be onto others. Best example: Emil. Emil himself is a weaking, a coward and... kind of a pansy, to be honest. She, however, idolizes him as a knight in shining armor; brave and strong, who will stop at nothing to protect her as a knight should. Her relationship with the boy is very, extremely flirtatious. She clings to him, acting like she's already his girlfriend sometimes, and while Emil isn't necessarily oblivious, he is awkward. Which she just finds to be cute.
Other Skills/Abilities: Marta fights with a Dual Spinner (see the 2nd picture linked above), a circular saw-like blade that is strapped to her wrist. Such a small weapon means what she lacks in attack power, she makes up for in multiple-hitting combos and decent speed. She is also capabe of using healing and light-based magic, even though she isn't an Elf or a Half-Elf, due to her contract with Ratatosk (she's carrying his core in her forehead, after all).
Other Weaknesses: Marta's definitely human. Nice and squishy. She's not a heavy hitter, nor is she a prodigy in any sort of combat area. She's competent, a little above average, but she's not going to hold a candle to, say, a war veteran in one-on-one combat.
History: Millenia ago, the world of Aselia was split into two: Tethe'alla and Sylvarant. Teeming with corruption, especially of the religious sort, one Chosen and her friends finally stood against the system. Together, they rejoined the worlds into one. Not everything came to a perfect, happy end, though. The climates and geography changed drastically, leaving bodies of water dried up and deserts covered in snow. The people of the separate worlds also grew to hate each other: Tethe'allans looked down on the Sylvaranti for their lack of sophisticated technology, while the Sylvaranti feared the Tethe'allans' power, influence and sophistication. This has led to the formation of a group of Sylvaranti reformists, the Vanguard, whose cause is to rise against the Church of Martel as well as the oppressive Tethe'allans.
Marta Lualdi grew up in the city of Palmacosta, living with her father, Brute, the leader of the Vanguard. Here, the Vanguard frequently met, planning their moves and mostly biding their time. With each passing day, Marta noticed the Vanguard's actions taking a turn for the worse to the point that she completely, outwardly and vocally disagreed with their intentions. She made plans to run away. One night, she got her chance.
The Church of Martel, led by Lloyd Irving, attacked Palmacosta and burned it to the ground. Many died that night, which was later dubbed The Blood Purge of Palmacosta. In the chaos, Marta stole one of the precious cores the Vanguard kept, and she ran. Members of the Vanguard caught up to her, determined to apprehend her. She prayed for the help of Lord Ratatosk, the Summon Spirit that oversees the monsters in the world. A jewel was placed on her forehead, seemingly the dormant core of Ratatosk himself. Those in her way were defeated by a young boy: blonde, noble, strong... and then, he was gone again. So she ran, as she'd planned, a creature (Centurion) named Tenebrae at her side. She decided that her best course of action was to track down each of the Centurion's cores in order to awaken Lord Ratatosk. This way, Lord Ratatosk could restore the flow of mana throughout the world, and it would be saved.
Six months went by with Marta still on her search. While near the city of Luin, Marta saw a young boy attempting to take on a large bear-like monster. Something about him was familiar... and she'd know that face from anywhere. Her savior. She stepped in and helped him defeat the monster, telling him that it was payback for when he saved her life. He seemed to not remember anything about it... but she knew she wasn't mistaken. They parted ways, and Marta resumed her search for the core closest to the area: Lumen's core.
She almost found it... but Richter found her first. A member of the Vanguard, Richter intended kill her. She was saved by the blond boy -- Emil -- yet again. He had formed a pact and become a Knight of Ratatosk, all so he could protect her. She was not only overjoyed, but touched. And she instantly developed a crush on the boy roughly the size of the seas combined.
They moved on in hopes to secure Lumen's core, but someone beat them to it. Lloyd. The very person in charge of the Blood Purge. Try as they might, Marta and Emil could not defeat him. He easily overpowered them, took the core and disappeared.
They had no choice but to move on, hopefully to stay in front of Lloyd in collecting the cores. They traveled from city to city, gathering clues to the locations of the cores and trying to find the truth behind Lloyd and what his master plan could possibly be.
Reality Description: Aselia is not in the best shape it has ever been in since the rejoining of Tethe'alla and Sylvarant. The weakened control of the mana has caused the climate to go crazy. Deserts have frozen over, forests are burning down, bodies of water are either drying up entirely or too chaotic to cross. All life on Aselia needs mana to survive, and this mana originally stemmed from the Great Kharlan Tree. However, during the Chosen of Sylvarant's Journey of Regeneration, the Great Kharlan tree was destroyed. This caused the flow of mana (in both worlds, mind - they were still separate at the time) to become unstable. Now, until the newly Great Tree can have time to flourish, the mana remains weakened and out of control.
The Sylvaranti Liberation Front (otherwise known as the Vanguard) had an idea. By gathering the eight cores of the Centurions - guardians under the Summon Spirit Ratatosk who oversee elemental monsters - and using them to awaken Ratatosk, the flow of mana could be restored as Ratatosk has the power to fix it. The cores themselves are spheres where the Centurions reside after losing their power or simply being dormant. Once hatched, the Centurion reawakens, his power restored. For example, when Tenebrae, the Centurion of darkness, gives his life to save Emil and Marta in Meltokio, he returns to his core state at the Temple of Darkness and the others must go find him and hatch his core to reawaken him. The cores themselves are very dangerous. Remaining in constant contact with one can drive a person insane, which has unfortunately happened several times in the game to other characters. This is because the massive amount of energy contained within each of them is more than a mortal can typically handle. There are exceptions to this rule, however: Marta is safe as she carries the dormant core of Ratatosk on her forehead. Emil is safe as he is a Knight of Ratatosk himself. Lloyd is safe for reasons that the party is not aware of yet (he has Martel's protection).
Even though the two former worlds are now physically one, the people are far from united. The Tethe'allans are arrogant, prideful; they look down on the Sylvaranti, who have fallen into the role of the oppressed, less propserous nation. The Sylvaranti Liberation Front, while originally a group with good intentions, is now just a militaristic and violent group of angry Sylvaranti. The Tethe'allans still follow the Church of Martel, to an extent. Racism is still around, but not to the extent that it was in the past. (Half Elves are no longer enslaved.)
The only people in Aselia who can use magic are those with elven blood in their veins. The exception seems to be that those gifted with Ratatosk's power, such as Marta and Emil, can also cast spells.
Some other important NPCs are the heroes of regeneration: Lloyd Irving, Colette Brunel, Genis and Raine Sage, Regal Bryant, Zelos Wilder, Sheena Fujibayashi and Presea Combatir.
